Global 180:Asia was initiated in 2005. Since its inception, our Asia directors, located in the city of Beijing, have been developing various initiatives to learn what will be effective with youth in the world’s largest nation. Over 80 youth from Canada and the United States joined together for the initial Global 180 project. During the 2006 Summer Olympic Games, our teams travelled to two different communities where we assisted with summer camps for middle school kids from orphanages and met back in Beijing for a final wrap-up dinner.

Camp - Sichuan, China

Since then, Global 180 has been involved with the training of youth workers and counselors, taking a lead in training volunteers who assisted youth and families during the tragic Sichuan earthquake. The support for this region continues in the form of 180 Camps with help over the last two years from teams of youth coming from Ontario and Alberta.

Other initiatives include training youth counsellors, teachers, conducting parenting seminars as well as hosting art festivals.

Since 2003 Global 180 has been working in Ukraine with a group of youth workers who have a dream of seeing a positive, alternative youth culture begin to emerge in their country. This project was initiated by teams of Canadian teenagers and young adults spending two weeks at a time touring schools in the capital city of Kyiv (Kiev).

These youth teams presented high energy assemblies in schools, visited classrooms and played sports in every host school. Concluding the 2-week project, an exciting “party-type” event (The 180 Event) was held in a local theatre bringing together 1200-1800 youth for fun, inspiration and a challenge to carry on the vision of making positive change. These projects were designed to provide a catalyst for Ukrainian leaders and youth to begin to formulate “Ukraine 180″ which is currently in development.

Do you know students who are in grade six, seven or eight? Are they bored on Saturday evenings?

In February 2011 Global 180 launched their 180 Fuse events at Dolphin Senior Public School in Mississauga. Essentially it is a social program which gives students a chance to connect with friends for 2 to 2.5 hours on a weekend where they may participate in various activities in a safe, familiar environment.

180 Fuse has been specifically designed for students and by students as we have surveyed the middle school students to determine the best activities to provide (which include: a cafe with snacks and a lounge, a live band, large group games, etc.). Also, our events conclude with a high energy presentation encouraging students to live responsibly following the Global 180 principles. This program is scheduled to occur once a month on a Saturday evening from 6:30pm-9pm (for exact dates, please see the 180 Fuse tab).

Ultimately, Global 180’s goal is to provide fun, entertaining recreation, where we have the opportunity to support Dolphin’s “Character Counts” education themes as well as to inspire, affirm and challenge young teens in the making of positive, healthy lifestyle and relationship choices.

A Brief History of 180 Fuse

Since its inception in 2001, Global 180 has desired to have a Canadian initiative for youth here in our home. After participating in numerous projects overseas and continuing still today, Global 180 has decided to extend its reach and begin a project here in Canada. Having been the home for most of the board members of Global 180, Mississauga Ontario seemed to be the logical place to launch a Canadian project for this youth organization.

In June 2010 research began as Eldon Wright (Director of Global 180) and Krysten Lees (Director of 180:Canada) began meeting with community leaders, city councilors, principals, etc., to determine the best way to meet the needs of youth in the city. Throughout the period of researching it was found that there was a significant gap in social programming for middle school students (grades 6-8). Too many middle school students spend weekend time finding ways to connect with and socialize with friends. Unfortunately, for many, this is practiced at the shopping mall or sitting at home playing video games or social networking on the internet. Global 180 would like to provide a place where students can gather together and socialize with other students and responsible adults, and learn valuable traits such as responsibility, integrity, honesty, etc. all in a stimulating environment.

Global 180’s desire is to assist the students of Mississauga as we provide them with a safe, familiar venue to gather on a Saturday evening. Our project is called 180 Fuse, and we believe that it’s time to turn things around! It’s time to provide a program for our middle school students that they can get excited about!

180 Fuse is what we call our outreach initiative for middle school students in local Canadian communities. The principal of Dolphin Senior Public, Mrs. Spence, commented in a letter of endorsement about 180 Fuse:

“Three events were held in February thru April 2011 with a tremendous response from the 70+ students who excitedly attended 180 Fuse as well as warm support from my School Council, staff and parents at Dolphin.

I am pleased to endorse the work of Global 180 and its directors and staff. They have an obvious passion and concern for helping adolescents through this most tumultuous and critical stage of life. I personally found them a pleasure to work with and they demonstrated flexibility in working through the details of planning and promoting this program in my school community. I am confident that that they will continue to experience much success as their program continues to develop in Mississauga and beyond.”

We will be regularly updating the information for our 180 Fuse events. So whether you’re a parent or a student make sure you check in regularly to see what the latest buzz is!
